The competitive examination comprises two successive stages :
(i) Civil Services (Preliminary) Examinations (Objective Type) for the selection of
candidates for Main Examination; and
(ii) Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written and Interview) for the selection of candidates for the various services and posts.

UPSC IAS Pre Exam was consist 2 objective MCQ type question and carry a maximum of 400 marks. Only those candidates who will declared by the UPSC to have qualified in the Preliminary Examination in the year will be eligible for admission to the Main Examination of that year provided they are otherwise eligible for admission to the Main Examination. The Main Examination will consist of a written examination and an Interview Test. The written examination will consist of 9 papers of conventional essay type in the subjects  Candidates should note that there was penalty for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective Type Question Papers. Because negative marking was applicable in Pre exam 2012.

IAS Pre Cutoff Prediction:
After adding the marks both papers the Cut off score for Prelims 2012 would be around 220 to 250 out of 400. Well just wait few more weeks.
